Blue Note Records is an entertainment company and American jazz record label. Originally committed to recording conventional jazz and small group swing, the label began to switch its attention to modern jazz since 1947. It has mainly been associated with the hard bop style of jazz, but also recorded essential albums in the avant-garde and free styles of jazz. Blue Note Records is currently owned by the [Universal Music Group](https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/universal-music-group) and in 2006 was expanded to fill the role of an umbrella label group, bringing together a wide variety of then EMI-owned labels and imprints specialized in the growing market segment of music for adults. Blue Note Records was founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis. It is headquartered in New York, United States.
